Home Food & Wine Eat in Color: A Review of Ja Grill

On my first trip to one of the newest joints to open in Hyde Park in decades, I was excited, anticipating some good food based on what I heard about their previous location in Lincoln Park. Started with the jerk wings and the honey wings…both are passable, but nothing in which to rave. Seafood is my favorite, so I had to try the jerk catfish…I was pleasantly surprised. I loved it, especially their jerk sauce…very nice – a slight spice with a little kick. I could pour this sauce on everything! You can order a small or large portion. It comes with the traditional rice and beans, and plantains. YUMMO! Now, don’t get me wrong…some might say they’ve had better, but this has become my go-to place for Jamaican catfish. Of course, I had to order a Ting, the traditional grapefruit soda, which is refreshing and pairs well with the spice.

Reviews should be all about the food and experience, so I’m going to give it to you straight. Enjoyed the food, but the service is in serious need of an upgrade…not in regard to personalities, pleasantries, but conscientiousness, speed of service. It’s a small space, so there’s not much you can do about that. I believe in supporting businesses in my neighborhood, but we have to be committed to a higher standard, one that we would expect in “other” establishments.

I’m a self-described foodie, but being a regular lady who just loves food, I like to support others and want businesses with a good product to succeed. Take a trip to the new Harper Court and give it a try. Let’s just hope they fix their service issues or regardless of the food…next!
